Leelanau Township is updating its Master Plan, the long-range document that guides future land use, zoning decisions, infrastructure planning, housing priorities, business activity, and protection of rural character. The Planning Commission has posted draft materials on future land use, home occupations and business use, implementation, airports, housing survey results, and public comment. The debate is not just about one project. It is about how much the township should change its rules over time to handle housing pressure, farm and tourism activity, land preservation, traffic, infrastructure, and local business needs. A Master Plan sounds abstract, but it is where the township decides what kind of place it is trying to stay or become before each zoning fight turns into its own argument.
