Genesee County commissioners placed a Health Care Services Millage renewal on the November 3 ballot. The current millage expires after 2026 and supports a health-services system for uninsured low-income residents, including the Genesee Health Plan. The final approved ballot language seeks 0.8000 mill for five years, 2027 through 2031, and estimates first-year revenue of about $11.28 million. The choice is whether this county-funded coverage bridge remains an appropriate local service, should be renewed at a smaller scale, or should be left primarily to state, federal and private health programs. Health coverage gaps do not disappear because a program is local. The question is whether county property taxes are the right way to keep filling them.

Should Genesee County renew its health-services millage this November?
