Many people feel less trust in major institutions such as government, media, universities, courts, corporations, unions, hospitals, and large nonprofits. Distrust can come from scandals, partisanship, poor service, confusing rules, hidden incentives, or a feeling that insiders face different consequences than everyone else. Trust often depends less on public relations than on institutional accountability: whether organizations admit mistakes, solve ordinary problems, explain decisions clearly, and apply consequences fairly. This poll asks what would rebuild trust at a broad public level. People do not rebuild trust because an institution tells them to. They rebuild trust when they see competence, honesty, and accountability over time.
