GLP-1 medicines are drugs used for diabetes, weight loss, and some other approved conditions. Medicare has generally covered them for certain medical uses but not simply for weight loss. CMS has created a Medicare GLP-1 Bridge for eligible weight-management uses, with participating manufacturers providing eligible drugs at a $245 net monthly price and eligible beneficiaries paying a $50 copay outside the normal Part D benefit flow. KFF describes the bridge as beginning in July 2026 and extending through the end of 2027. The policy dispute is not just whether the drugs work. It is whether Medicare should pay for broad obesity treatment, limit coverage to people with related health risks, negotiate harder on price, or avoid adding a large new cost to the program. These drugs could help people avoid worse health problems later, but Medicare cannot just write a blank check without a clear price limit.
How should Medicare handle coverage for GLP-1 weight-loss drugs?
