SNAP is the federal food assistance program often called food stamps. States normally cannot create their own list of banned foods without federal approval, but USDA has approved a series of 2026 state waivers restricting purchases such as soda, energy drinks, candy, prepared desserts, or sweetened beverages in several states. Supporters say public food aid should support health and should not subsidize products linked to diet-related disease. Critics say restrictions can stigmatize low-income families, make checkout harder, and do less for nutrition than raising benefits or making healthy food cheaper. I get why people do not want benefits spent on candy and soda, but families are already juggling prices, transportation, picky kids, and limited stores. I want a policy that actually helps people eat better, not just makes checkout more embarrassing.

How should states handle SNAP restrictions on sugary drinks and candy?
