Osceola County voters approved renewal of a millage supporting school resource officers and general operation of the county sheriff department and jail. Those uses compete for staffing and operating dollars but address different public-safety functions: a visible law-enforcement presence in schools, patrol and investigative capacity throughout the county, and safe jail operations. With voters choosing to preserve the revenue, county officials still have to determine whether the funding should maintain the existing balance or move toward whichever function faces the strongest service or staffing pressure. These services share a funding source, but they are not interchangeable. The county should be clear about what risk it is trying hardest to reduce.
How should Osceola County balance renewed funding for school officers, the sheriff and the jail?
