Public schools are expected to do many things at once: teach academics, keep children safe, support social development, help students with disabilities, prepare young people for work or college, and communicate with families. Many people disagree about where the school’s job should begin and end. Some want schools to focus more narrowly on reading, math, science, and discipline. Others want whole-child support around mental health, meals, special needs, social skills, and community stability. This poll asks what kind of trust people want to place in public schools. Schools cannot replace families, but families also cannot do everything alone. The hard part is deciding what schools should be responsible for and what they should not.
