In July 2026, Representative Dina Titus asked Nevada officials to pause certain tax abatements for data centers planned on federal land until the 2027 Legislature can examine water, environmental, and fiscal effects. Data-center growth promises construction, technology investment, and tax-base expansion, but it can also create large electricity and water demands. The debate is whether abatements remain necessary and what community benefits or resource safeguards should accompany them. A tax abatement reduces or suspends taxes that a qualifying project would otherwise owe, usually to encourage investment or economic development. Nevada can welcome technology investment without giving away tax revenue before knowing who supplies the power, where the water comes from, and what residents receive in return.

What should Nevada require before granting another data-center tax abatement?
