Leelanau County’s Housing Action Committee has developed a Housing Readiness Communities checklist for townships and villages. The checklist is meant to help local governments evaluate whether their plans, ordinances, and standards meet local workforce-housing needs. Housing pressure is countywide, but land-use control is mostly local. County-level guidance can help small governments compare tools and avoid reinventing the same work. But some townships and villages may resist county pressure if they believe housing standards should be set locally based on infrastructure, rural character, and voter preferences. A checklist will not build a house by itself, but it can show which local rules are helping and which ones are quietly blocking workers from living here.

How aggressively should Leelanau County push housing-readiness standards?
