Most Americans participate in politics through a system dominated by two major parties. That can make elections simpler and help form governing coalitions, but it can also leave many voters feeling politically homeless. The public frustration is not only about party labels. People also worry about primaries, campaign money, media incentives, closed political networks, and whether reforms such as ranked-choice elections would give ordinary voters more meaningful choices. This poll asks how people feel about political representation, not about any one pending bill or election. I know people across the political map who feel politically homeless. The question is whether the party system is the real problem, or whether the same frustration would follow us into any system.
