Idaho already designates English as the state’s official language by statute. HJR 6 would add that designation to the Idaho Constitution. A yes vote would constitutionalize the existing policy; a no vote would leave the statutory designation in place. Because the immediate practical policy is already state law, the real choice is about durability and constitutional importance: whether an official-language rule should be harder for future legislatures to alter and elevated to the same legal level as other state constitutional provisions. Not every durable preference belongs in a constitution. If English is already the official language, voters should decide whether the policy is foundational enough to entrench or whether ordinary legislation is the better place to adapt future language-access rules.
