Leelanau County’s Planning Commission has a role in coordinating planning and development regulations with other governmental units and educating the public about planning tools. The county also has a General Plan process, while individual townships and villages control many zoning decisions. Countywide coordination matters because housing, roads, water, farmland, parks, tourism, and environmental impacts do not stop at township lines. But too much county involvement can feel like pressure on local governments that have their own voters, infrastructure limits, and rural-character goals. The question is how strong the county’s coordinating role should be. Local control matters, but disconnected planning can leave every community fighting the same housing, road, and land-use problems alone.
